Dick Luther

Coach Dick Luther, Class of 1962. Coach lettered in football and golf and was a member of the WHS “W” Club. After graduating from WHS he went on to earn a degree in Physical Education in 1968 from UW- La Crosse. Coach Luther taught for 30 years in the Waukesha School District, 24 of them at White Rock Elementary School. He coached high school basketball for 26 years (5 years at WHS). He also coached college basketball for 21 years - 13 at UW-Waukesha (2 State Championships) and 4 years at UW-Whitewater finishing with the D-3 National Championship in 2012. In 2007, Coach was inducted into the UW- Waukesha “Hall of Fame”. He returned to the “Blackshirt” staff as Assistant Boys Basketball Coach in 2014. Beginning in 1990 as an advocate for the homeless, he created Coach Dick Luther’s “Help the Homeless” and over the years, his fundraising events raised nearly $100,000 for area shelters. His most successful venture occurred on four separate Christmas Days spending 24 hours in a cardboard box to bring awareness of homelessness. He and his son Rod spent the first of those four Christmas Days together. Because of his cause, Coach Luther was the recipient of the WEA Richard Lewandowski Award for Humanitarian Effort in 2000. His “Action Basketball Camps ran for 34 years and attracted 25, 500 campers. One of his camp awards was presented in memory of South graduate Jim Fay. Coach and his wife Kay have two children, Robyn (a 1982 South graduate) and Rod (a 1987 South graduate). In addition to their daughter-in-law Cassey, they have eight grandchildren: Alex, Brianna, Jazmine, Jaron, Andy, Jonah, Olivia and Jillian. “I have been blessed to be a Blackshirt, guided by outstanding WHS Teachers”
