Home of the Blackshirts
History of the Blackshirt NameDuring the mid-1930's, Waukesha High School belonged to the Suburban Conference. The conference featured four schools with red and white school colors. It was common for the conference schools to appear at athletic contests with the same colored jerseys as today's practice of assigning light colors for the jerseys of visiting teams and dark colors for the home teams (or vice versa) had not evolved at the time. Apparently the people around the table agreed to the "proposed" name change because after that meeting the Waukesha High School teams which were formerly known as the "Cardinals" became known as the "Blackshirts" but retained the cardinal mascot. The red and white school colors were joined by black to make up the three school colors that now appear on uniforms of Waukesha South. The best estimate of the year is 1934. According to the legend, a group of athletic directors met and discussed the possibility of some schools changing their red colors to avoid the duplication that was taking place. None of the other member schools were willing to change, so Lee Saubert, a long-time Waukesha High School coach and athletic director became frustrated and said that the Waukesha teams would wear black and might as well be called the "Blackshirts."
